SUMMARY:Automatic landing performance of a civil aircraft in the presence o
 f vertical gusts
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer:Yaacov Eisenthal\n Faculty:Department of Aerospace Eng
 ineering\n Institute:Technion – Israel Institute of Technology\n Locatio
 n:https://technion.zoom.us/j/94464769758\n Zoom: \n Abstract: \n Details:
\n The commercial aviation industry is motivated to continuously improve l
anding performance without involving radical changes to aircraft design or
operation. In the presence of strong gusts the landing is considered to b
e one of the most complex and challenging maneuvers to perform correctly\,
especially in large civil aircraft. It is a common knowledge that increas
ing approach speed in gusty weather makes the task easier. In order to avo
id the risk of runway overrun\, it is necessary to define what is the mini
mal approach speed required for a particular gust profile and magnitude. I
t also raises a question regarding the landing configuration: Can differen
t flaps setting help?\nBoth of these questions are addressed using a reali
stic 3DOF simulation of a DC-8 aircraft equipped with a generic automatic
landing system as well as an angle of attack (AOA) protection and throttle
limiter. It was found that keeping the flaps fully extended and increasin
g the approach speed is beneficial in gusty conditions. Furthermore\, a qu
antitative guideline is provided using a vertical gust limitation mapped a
s a function of selected approach speed.\nZoom Meeting
