SUMMARY:Control and Estimation Challenges of Direct Exoplanet Imaging from
 Space
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer:Leonid Pogorelyuk\n Faculty:Department of Mechanical a
 nd Aerospace Engineering\n Institute:Princeton University\n Location:Class
 room 165\, ground floor\, Library\, Aerospace Eng.\n Zoom: \n Abstract: \n
Details: \n Taking an image of a planet proves to be extremely challengin
g when the planet orbits a star tens of parsecs away from our sun. Light s
ignals from an Earth-like exoplanets are 10 orders of magnitudes dimmer th
an signals from their host stars and can only be detected by space telesco
pes employing a special optical design - the coronagraph. However\, the fr
action of the starlight blocked by coronagraphs suffers from manufacturing
imperfections\, alignment errors\, and mechanical and thermal stresses ac
ting on the instrument. These issues have to be addressed in real-time via
estimation and control of the wavefront of the incoming light\, as well a
s with offline image post-processing techniques.\nThe choice of observatio
n and post-processing strategies has significant effect on the planet dete
ctability threshold. In particular\, statistically informed reduced-order
approaches may reduce the severe wavefront stability requirements on futur
e space telescopes\, making them more affordable and facilitating the disc
overy and characterization of habitable exoplanets.
