  Details: \n The tools necessary for the aeroelastic design of very flexib
 le aircraft with geometric nonlinearities are limited. The present work de
 scribes a novel model that integrates a modal formulation with a three-dim
 ensional geometrically nonlinear structural dynamic model\, for the effect
 ive study of very flexible aircraft structures under impulsive loads\, suc
 h as gusts\, that cause large displacements.\nThe presented modal formulat
 ion links linear segments with nonlinear coupling terms. The model nonline
 arity is captured by dividing the wing structure into several spanwise seg
 ments\, each having large rigid-body displacements but may assume to have 
 linear elastic deformations. The required number of modes may be reduced b
 y using fictitious masses at the segment interfaces. The structural dynami
 c model based on co-rotational linear frameworks is developed\, matching t
 he modal formulation characteristics.
