SUMMARY:Flow Control: From Inception to Application
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer:Michael (Miki) Amitay\n Faculty:Mechanical\, Aerospace
and Nuclear Engineering Department\n Institute:Rensselaer Polytechnic Ins
 titute (RPI)\n Location:Classroom 165\, ground floor\, Library\, Aerospace
Eng.\n Zoom: \n Abstract: \n Details: \n Flow control has emerged as an e
nabling technology to improve vehicles’ performance.  It involves passi
ve and active devices to affect a beneficial change in wall-bounded or fre
e-shear flows.  The presentation will provide and demonstrate a few ideas
to control flows and the route(s) to application. The talk will be divide
d into three major parts:\n\n\n Current and future activities in the Cent
er for Flow Physics and Control at RPI.\n Piezoelectric-based actuators\,
including synthetic jets\, dynamic low aspect ratio\, surface mounted pin
s\, and Piezoelectrically Driven Oscillating Surface (PDOS) actuators and
their interaction with different cross flows.  This will include a flow o
ver a flat plat\, laminar-turbulent transition control\, and separation co
ntrol over flapped airfoils.\n Application: performance enhancement of a
vertical tail of a commercial airplane using distributed finite span Synth
etic Jet actuators – from small-scale wind tunnel model(s) to flight.\n
