SUMMARY:Investigation of Aluminum-Water Reaction for Hydrogen Production an
 d Energy Storage
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer:Shani Elitzur\n Faculty:Department of Aerospace Engine
 ering\n Institute:Technion – Israel Institute of Technology\n Location:C
 lassroom 165\, ground floor\, Library\, Aerospace Eng.\n Zoom: \n Abstract
: \n Details: \n Hydrogen is considered to be the fuel of the future due t
o its environmental friendly reaction products\, only water\, and its high
specific reaction energy\, about three times more than fossil fuels. The
challenges preventing a wide use of hydrogen are associated with its stora
ge and transportation problems due to its very low density and high reacti
vity and explosion hazard.\nThis research aims at investigating the charac
teristics of on-site and on-demand production of hydrogen using the chemic
al reaction between aluminum powder and water. It utilizes an original\, p
atented\, in-house\, aluminum activation method that enables spontaneous r
eaction between aluminum and any type of water at regular conditions\; roo
m temperature and atmospheric pressure. The hydrogen produced from the rea
ction can be channeled directly into a fuel cell to generate electricity w
ithout pollution and at high specific electric energy of up to 2200 Wh/kg
Al.\nThe seminar will present an experimental and theoretical investigatio
n of the aluminum-water reaction for hydrogen and electric energy producti
on on demand for aerospace\, marine\, and ground applications.
