SUMMARY:Mechanics of Squishy Materials
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer:Tal Cohen\n Faculty:Department of Mechanical Engineeri
 ng\, MIT\n Institute:School of Engineering and Applied Sciences\, Harvard\
 n Location:Classroom 165\, ground floor\, Library\, Aerospace Eng.\n Zoom:
  \n Abstract: \n Details: \n In this seminar I will address some fundament
 al problems in the nonlinear mechanics of soft and biological materials\;
 (i) the geometrically unique phenomenon of elastic fingering\, a rate-inde
 pendent instability observed at large strains\, (ii) the ubiquitous phenom
 enon of creasing\, which in recent years has been indicated as a distinct
 mode of instability from wrinkling\, (iii) the effect of viscoelasticity i
 n dynamic cavitation\, and (iv) the modeling of chemo-mechanically coupled
  swelling and surface growth of materials\, in absence of a natural refere
 nce configuration. I will show how the theoretical models are able to capt
 ure the essential features of these phenomena\, in comparison with numeric
 al simulations and experimental observations\, and will discuss some ongoi
 ng efforts to apply the models experimentally to measure the material prop
 erties of biological tissue.
