SUMMARY:Semianalytical Orbit Propagation Using Fourier Series Expansions
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer:Nadav Mailhot\n Faculty:The Stephen B. Klein Faculty o
 f Aerospace Engineering\n Institute:Technion – Israel Institute of Techn
 ology\n Location:Classroom 240\, 1st floor\, Aerospace Eng. building\n Zoo
 m: https://technion.zoom.us/j/98372598857\n Abstract: Although satellite o
rbit propagation is one of the oldest problems in artificial satellite the
ory\, there are still remaining challenges related to propagation speed an
d precision. In this talk\,  a new semianalytical orbit propagation metho
d is designed to account for conservative perturbing forces. As opposed to
existing methods\, which typically rely on averaging to separate the sate
 llite motion into secular\, short-periodic\, and long-periodic terms\, the
new approach is based on the development of the Fourier series expansion
of the perturbation’s potential function. When this expanded potential i
s used in the Lagrange planetary equations\, the result is a form of the s
atellite equations of motion which can be solved approximately by simple i
ntegration. The method is applied to the J2 oblateness perturbation as wel
l as the third body perturbations of the Sun and Moon. The resulting solut
ion is compared in simulations to existing averaging-based methods as well
as numerical integration of the full equations of motion. The proposed me
thod is shown to have advantages in some cases in terms of precision and/o
r computational cost.\n\nThis work is towards a Ph.D. degree under the sup
ervision of Prof. Pini Gurfil\, Faculty of Aerospace Engineering\n Details
