SUMMARY:Investigation of the effect of water-in-fuel emulsion spray on an e
 dge flame
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer:Ohad Shalev-Eggert\n Faculty:Department of Aerospace E
 ngineering\n Institute:Technion – Israel Institute of Technology\n Locat
 ion:\n Zoom: https://technion.zoom.us/j/98800929742\n Abstract: Water-in-f
uel emulsion droplets are comprised of an inner water droplet immiscible w
ith\, and surrounded by\, an outer liquid fuel layer. As part of the world
wide effort to reduce pollution emissions from combustion processes\, the
use of such liquid droplets is considered as a means to increase combustio
n efficiency and reduce pollutants emissions from existing power systems.
This is achieved mainly due to a reduction in the burned gas temperature i
nduced by the water content and to secondary droplet atomization\, as pare
nt droplets micro-explode producing faster-evaporating smaller offspring d
 roplets\, leading to better mixing.\n\nIn the current work\, a new two-dim
ensional thermal-diffusional model is formulated to describe the edge flam
e formed by two laminar co-flowing streams\, one of an oxidant and the oth
er of fuel vapor and water-in-fuel emulsion droplets\, separated initially
by a splitter plate. A numerical investigation was performed of how the i
nitial presence of the water-in-fuel droplets and their micro-explosions e
ffect the thermal structure of the compound flame in the mixing layer down
stream of the splitter plate. Trends were identified that\, among others\,
relate the temperature of different flame zones\, flame location and stab
ility\, to the percentage and properties of the water in the emulsion drop
lets. These findings contribute to understanding the potential working con
 ditions\, pros and cons of water-in-fuel emulsions.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nMon\, 24
