SUMMARY:Regional Positioning Using a Low Earth Orbit Satellite Constellatio
 n
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer:Tomer Shtark\n Faculty:Department of Aerospace Enginee
 ring\n Institute:Technion – Israel Institute of Technology\n Location:Cl
 assroom 165\, ground floor\, Library\, Aerospace Eng.\n Zoom: \n Abstract:
\n Details: \n Satellite navigation constellations orbit the Earth in med
ium and geosynchronous orbits. These high altitudes raise the operational
and launching costs\, but provide wide coverage\, which may be redundant i
f only regional coverage is needed. Low Earth orbit satellites\, on the ot
her hand\, suffer from reduced coverage capabilities\, among other issues.
\nThis research develops methods for designing low Earth orbit satellite c
onstellations\, aimed at position determination at a predefined geodetic r
egion. This problem is solved by two strategies: spreading the satellites
in a time-varying latitude strip\, or spreading them over few orbital plan
es. The former strategy produces a relatively high revisit frequency\, but
requires a relatively high number of orbital planes\, and produces a rela
tively low coverage duration. The latter strategy produces long coverage d
urations\, requires significantly fewer orbital planes\, but produces a lo
 wer revisit frequency.
