SUMMARY:Science and Engineering of Electric Propulsion
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer:Michael Keidar\, A. James Clark Professor of Engineeri
ng\n Faculty:Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department
of Biomedical Engineering (secondary appointment)\n Institute:School of E
ngineering and Applied Science The George Washington University\n Location
 :Classroom 165\, ground floor\, Library\, Aerospace Eng.\n Zoom: https://t
echnion.zoom.us/j/98367931661\n Abstract: Electric propulsion has become p
opular nowadays owing to the trend of miniaturizing the size and mass of s
atellites. In this talk we will discuss some recent trend\, advances and p
erspectives of electric propulsion in both low-power and high-power limits
.\nOne of main drawback of the most popular approach\, Hall thrusters\, is
that their efficiency and thrust-to-power ratio significantly deteriorate
when its size and power level are reduced. We will discuss some alternati
 ve approach—a low-power (&lt\;50 W)\, lightweight (~100 g)\, two-stage p
ropulsion system. The system is based on a micro-cathode arc thruster with
magnetoplasmadynamic second stage (mCAT-MPD)\, which achieves the followi
ng parameters: a thrust of up to 1.7 mN at a TPR of 37 mN/W and an efficie
ncy of about 50%. This thruster\, in addition to “traditional” inverse
\, displays the anomalous direct (growing) “TPR versus specific impulse
Isp” trend at high Isp values and allows multimodality at high efficienc
 y.\nIn the high-power limit\, multiple configurations of air-breathing thr
usters are currently considered. This talk will outline state of the art a
nd will present some new development such as scramjet configuration that c
an significantly reduce the drag by avoiding compression. In addition\, co
ncept of air—breathing plasma thruster without neutralizer will be discu
 ssed.\n Details: \n
