SUMMARY:Small Aero-engine Design
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer:Prof. Junqiang ZHU\n Faculty:The Institute of Thermoph
 ysics\n Institute:The Chinese Academy of Science\n Location:Classroom 165\
 , ground floor\, Library\, Aerospace Eng.\n Zoom: \n Abstract: \n Details:
\n Market requirements for business\, commuter and unmanned aircrafts gen
erally lead to compact\, low cost and fuel efficient small aero-engines. D
esign and technology requirements for small aero-engines\, compared to the
large ones used on most commercial aircrafts\, are quite challenging. Res
ulting compressors and turbines normally have high pressure ratio and stag
e loading\, small aspect ratio airfoils\, transonic Mach numbers\, low Rey
nolds numbers and high turning blades. The small size of the turbomachiner
y adds another complexity in terms of the stringent structural requirement
s to achieve the desired target life as well as the manufacturing\, produc
tion and assembly challenges associated with small aero-engines. This pres
entation will attempt to point out these challenges and solutions based on
our own experience working in the area. Thanks to the innovative key tech
nologies we stored over the past three decades\, (including the non-shroud
 ed wider chord/swept fan blades\, advanced highly-loaded mixed-flow compre
 ssor\, low-emission reverse flow combustor\, highly-loaded un-cooled turbi
ne\, aggressive inter-turbine transition duct and the novel lobed-mixer ex
 haust system\,) a brand-new\, compact\, fuel efficient small aero-engine r
ated at a take-off thrust of 1000 daN was developed.
