SUMMARY:Small Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine Blade and Control System Redesig
n\, Testing and Evaluation for Urban Environment
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer:Gandelman Roman\n Faculty:Department of Aerospace Engi
 neering\n Institute:Technion – Israel Institute of Technology\n Location
 :Classroom 165\, ground floor\, Library\, Aerospace Eng.\n Zoom: \n Abstra
ct: \n Details: \n Small wind turbines located in urban environment\, ofte
n suffer from low wind velocity regime and high wind fluctuation.\nThe low
wind regime\, leads to increase in blades idle time\, a period where no p
roduction of power is maintained due to the low torque on the blades.\nThe
high wind fluctuation leads to suboptimal wind turbine working points\, a
s the blades RPM (rounds per minute) is not in its optimal point.\nIn the
present work the problem of low torque in low wind velocity is solved by m
ulti variable torque and power optimization of wind turbine blades geometr
y in low wind velocity by numerical optimization based on BEM (blade eleme
nt momentum theory) a method for evaluating blade performance by combining
momentum theory with blade element theory.\n\nThe problem of suboptimal w
orking point in fluctuating wind is dealt by a new and cheap control metho
d based on switching the load by a solid state relay (SSR).\nSwitching the
load leads to control of the rotor acceleration/deceleration and so acqui
ring the wanted optimal RPM working point.\n\nThe control algorithm and su
itable control hardware were implemented in hardware with national instrum
ent controllers (NI) and software (LabVIEW) and tested with commercial win
d turbine in the lab and in real wind conditions.\nSystem design\, tests a
nd results will be shown in these seminar.
