SUMMARY:The 3rd Annual Professor Singer Memorial Lecture - "Morphing Compos
 ites for Aerospace Applications"
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer:Prof. Paul Weaver\n Faculty:Department of Aerospace En
 gineering\n Institute:University of Bristol\n Location:Classroom 165\, gro
 und floor\, Library\, Aerospace Eng.\n Zoom: \n Abstract: \n Details: \n I
t is known that a structure should resist loads without failure. For struc
 tures that contain humans\, i.e. houses\, boats\, cars\, aircraft etc.\, t
hey do not stretch (or deform) a great deal and those that are required to
move around should be lightweight to keep fuel costs down e.g. aircrafts
 and super-lightweight to overcome gravity (e.g. rockets\, spacecraft).\nTh
is seminar explores the possibility of using unusual properties of materia
ls with some additional nonlinear geometric behavior to either reduce mass
or to achieve a significant shape change (morphing) of a structure. Examp
les are drawn from aircrafts\, helicopters\, wind turbine blades\, cars an
 d from nature.
