SUMMARY:The 4th Annual Professor Singer Memorial Lecture - "The Challenges
in using Composite Materials for Aeronautical Structures"
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer:Gila Ghilai\n Faculty:Director of Aeronautical Structu
 res Development\n Institute:Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI)\n Location:C
 lassroom 165\, ground floor\, Library\, Aerospace Eng.\n Zoom: \n Abstract
: \n Details: \n The use of advanced composite structures is continuously
increasing in the modern aerospace industry. Military aircraft were the fi
rst to take advantage of the weight saving potential of composites. The mo
st recent civil aircraft mirror this trend\, with much of their major stru
cture exploiting composites. The use of all-composite structures for unman
ned vehicles is routine nowadays.\nWhile composites present many advantage
s relative to conventional metallic structures\, in terms of weight\, stif
fness\, fatigue behavior and corrosion resistance\, they also suffer from
many limitations\, especially their labour intensive manufacturing methods
\, which result in high recurring cost.\nThe lecture will focus on the cha
llenges of implementing composites in aeronautical structures\, and will p
resent actual applications in IAI different products\, with the reasoning
behind the selection of their structural concept and manufacturing technol
 ogy.
