SUMMARY:The Meir Hanin Awards Ceremony and Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer:\n Faculty:\n Institute:\n Location:Auditorium 235\, t
he Faculty of Aerospace Engineering\, Technion\n Zoom: \n Abstract: The Me
ir Hanin Awards Ceremony:\n\n The Meir Hanin International Aerospace Priz
e awardee: Prof. Wei Shyy\n The Meir Hanin Young Researchers scholarships
awardees:\n\n Assistant Professor Alexandros Terzis – Aerospace Engine
ering Faculty Member\n Joel Van-Der-Lee\, PhD student\n\n\n\nThe ceremony
will be followed by a seminar by Prof. Wei Shyy\, winner of the Internati
onal Hanin Award.\nSeminar Titel: Low Reynolds number flight vehicles: sca
ling and aerodynamics\n\nAbstract: Some of the most interesting areas in a
erospace science and technologies are on either higher\, faster and larger
systems or lower\, slower and smaller flying capabilities. In this talk\,
recent efforts in developing small\, fixed and flapping wing flight vehic
les are discussed. As the vehicle sizes vary\, non-proportional scaling be
tween areas and weight\, and\, accordingly\, shifting dominance of physica
l mechanisms create different operating parameters and technical requireme
nts. In this seminar\, examples drawn from both canonical cases as well as
developed flight vehicles will be presented. Unsteady aerodynamics via wi
ng motion and softer materials under uncertain flight environments are som
e of the main focus of the talk.\n\nAbout Professor Wei Shyy:\nProfessor W
ei Shyy is a Chair Professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Te
chnology (Guangzhou). He was President of the Hong Kong University of Scie
nce and Technology and Chair Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Enginee
ring. Prior to joining HKUST in 2010\, he was Clarence L. “Kelly” John
son Collegiate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Aerospace Engin
eering of the University of Michigan.\nHe was the Principal Investigator o
f several multi-institutional research projects\, funded by the US Governm
ent and industries\, on future space transport\, bio-inspired flight\, and
computational aero-science. He is General Editor of the Cambridge Aerospa
ce Book Series published by the Cambridge University Press\; and Co-Editor
-in-Chief of Encyclopedia of Aerospace Engineering\, a major reference wor
k published by Wiley-Blackwell.\n\nProfessor Shyy is an elected member of
Academia Sinica (Taipei)\, an agenda contributor of the World Economic For
um\, and Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics
(AIAA). He has received awards for his research and professional contribut
ions\, including the AIAA 2003 Pendray Aerospace Literature Award\, the AS
ME 2005 Heat Transfer Memorial Award\, and The Engineers’ Council (Sherm
an Oaks\, CA) 2009 Distinguished Educator Award. In 2021\, the French Gove
rnment made him an Officer of the Legion of Honor. In 2023\, the Internati
onal Conference on Computational &amp\; Experimental Engineering and Scien
ces (ICCES) honored him the Satya N. Atluri Award.\n\n&nbsp\;\n Details: \
