Dr. Alexandros Terzis

Dr. Alexandros Terzis joined our faculty as an Assistant Professor starting October 2020. before joining the faculty, Alexandros was a research associate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University (USA), funded by Stanford’s TomKat Center for Sustainable Energy. Prior to that, he was an Alexander von Humboldt postdoctoral research fellow at the Institute of Aerospace Thermodynamics of the University of Stuttgart (Germany), and a scientific collaborator at the Group of Thermal Turbomachinery of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, EPFL (Switzerland). He has also worked in various collaborative research centers funded by the German Research Foundation and has been invited as a guest researcher at the Institute of Turbomachinery of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China) and the Environmental Hydrogeology Group of Utrecht University (The Netherlands).

His research is in the broad areas of multiphase thermo-fluid dynamics and interfacial transport phenomena with a host of related applications and a strong link to fundamentals. The focus is on understanding the related physics across scales (submicron/meso to macro), and in complex multi-phase media, and employing this knowledge to the development of interdisciplinary research that can address societal grand challenges. Specific examples include alternative water resources, ultra-efficient propulsion systems and thermal management, and green aviation. His activities are mainly of experimental nature and combine a variety of optical flow diagnostics and thermophysical measurement techniques, coupled with theoretical and computational approaches.

Alexandros received his Dipl.-Ing. in Mechanical Engineering from Aristotle University (Greece) of his native Thessaloniki. He holds an M.Sc. in Gas Turbine Technology (awarded with the Baxter Memorial Prize) from Cranfield University (UK), and earned his Ph.D. in Thermofluids from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, EPFL (Switzerland). He has additionally completed the Stanford Ignite Program—a certificate program in Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Graduate School of Business of Stanford University (USA).
