Prof. Yaakov Oshman’s lecture will be on the topic:
Information (Fusion) is Power – היתוך) מידע הוא כוח)
Properly weighed, information can be used to enhance the performance and function of complex systems. Indeed, an information source (often embedded in mathematical models describing the physics of the problem) can be regarded as a “generalized sensor” that, when properly used, can complement and improve the function of other, physical, sensors. This talk will address some aspects of information fusion: its meaning and nature, the tools and disciplines involved, foundational algorithms. Time permitting, we will also describe several examples of graduate research (performed in the framework of studies towards advanced degrees) focusing on the subject matter: improving missile guidance via estimation; spoofing-robust GNSS; spacecraft attitude determination.
Asst. Prof. Ian Jacobi’s lecture will be on the topic:
Smart Surfaces and Turbulent Structures – משטחים חכמים ומבנים טורבולנטיים
Surface friction is responsible for as much as half of the total energy consumption in planes, boats, and pipelines. To reduce the surface drag, we need to understand how it is produced via turbulence, and develop new surfaces capable of controlling turbulence. We attack this problem from the perspective of the surface, by manufacturing special, liquid-infused, drag-reducing coatings, and from the perspective of the turbulent flow, by exploring the structure of turbulence and how that structure can be modified or tuned by surface roughness to reduce drag.
The talk will be given in Hebrew
