Nonconventional Laminates - Design, Optimization, and Manufacturing

One of the Centers of Research Education and Innovation (CREI) of Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) is the newly formed Advanced Structures, Processes, and Engineered Materials Center, ASPEM.  The core mission of ASPEM is to take a holistic approach to product development via integrated materials, design and manufacturing of advanced composites made of polymeric, metallic, and ceramic constituents in various forms.  After a brief description of ASPEM, the presentation will define nonconventional laminates, which have their ply orientation angles chosen/designed freely.  One particular form of nonconventional laminates, called variable stiffness laminates, will be described in some details demonstrating their advantages, analysis and design methodologies, and manufacturing based on steered fiber construction.  The approach will be demonstrated via case study.
