The undergraduate program of the department provides its students with the basis for an engineering career in Israel’s aerospace industry and for developing professional skills. This objective is achieved by a broad scientific basis in the first three semesters, followed by the fundamentals of all major aeronautical and astronautical disciplines. These include aerodynamics, structures, propulsion, control theory, production and design, systems engineering, and space engineering.
In their fourth year, a broad spectrum of elective courses is offered to expose the students to modern aerospace developments, including computer applications in aeronautics and astronautics. The senior year is also devoted to a design project focusing on the comprehensive design of a complete aerospace system.
In many of the projects, feasibility tests are carried out on small-scale models, whether it’s in the wind tunnel or flight testing. Some of the projects are completed in cooperation with industry partners. For example, Rafael was involved in the construction and launching of a rocket design project, and IAI and Elbit-El-Op aided in the Technion satellite project (TECHSAT).
The students have access to teaching laboratories equipped with state of the art equipment in the fields of aerodynamics, aircraft structures, propulsion and combustion, production and maintenance, and aircraft control. Also available to the students are sophisticated computer resources, which are used for both tutorials of classic engineering subjects and for teaching subjects such as interactive graphics, simulation of aerospace systems, and computer-aided design.
Finally, it is important to emphasize that the engineering education the faculty graduates receive qualifies them to work in large engineering systems, aeronautical and others. Indeed, faculty graduates are involved in a variety of the country’s advanced engineering activities and some lead and manage them.
Studying towards an additional Bachelor’s degree including a Teacher’s Certificate
In parallel with studying for a first degree in the Faculty, there is a possibility of studying towards an additional first degree (including a teacher’s certificate) in the Faculty of Education in Science and Technology. The additional undergraduate studies are in one of the following seven tracks of specialization: Mathematics Education, Physics Education, Chemistry, Biology Education, Computer Science Education, Mechanical Engineering Education and Electrical Engineering Education.
The Ministry of Education provides recipients of this degree with a teaching license for high schools in the area of specialization. These studies are subject to all Technion regulations regarding an additional first degree. Details can be found under the chapter “Faculty of Education in Science and Technology. “
