Prof. Vassilis Theofilis Named Fellow of the British Royal Aeronautical Society

01.09.2025

We are delighted to share that Prof. Vassilis Theofilis has been named a Fellow of the British Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS).

Prof. Theofilis has pioneered theoretical developments which underpin modern linear stability analysis of flows with multiple inhomogeneous directions from the incompressible to the hypersonic regime, making in the process seminal discoveries such as the self-excitation of nominally two-dimensional laminar separated flows at all speeds and the existence of linear instabilities in the internal structure of shock layers. His ideas have been adopted by specialists and their research groups in academia and research centers worldwide, leading to the development of state-of-the-art tools for theoretically founded prediction and control of laminar-turbulent transition.

Over the past 25 years, Prof. Theofilis has enjoyed continuous support from the US Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the Office of Naval Research, and several of his graduate students supported by these programs have established themselves as successful practitioners at NASA and Universities worldwide. Professor Theofilis’ work has been recognized in multiple ways, including the prestigious 2018 Ludwig Prandtl Memorial Lecture, and his consistent inclusion in 2020 and continuous ascent in subsequent years in the Stanford list of the world’s most influential scientists.
