In this talk, we will look at recent computational developments of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulations and aerodynamic design for power production in aerospace and renewables. The approach of coupling a turbulent flow solver as Large Eddy Simulation (LES) with a structural dynamics solver will be described by joining the finite volume method (FVM) with the combined finite element method-discrete element method (FEM-DEM). The coupled FSI approach will be deployed to study power generation from kinetic turbines of low speed aerodynamics to hydrogen fusion reactors of high speed aerodynamics and non-linear acoustics.
In the second part of the talk, we will look at a recent aerodynamic blade design method to delay stall and reduce tonal noise. Other passive control means as micro vortex generators and Gurney flaps will be discussed for turbomachinery and kinetic turbines applications. The talk will conclude with a short discussion on supersonic jet noise and associated non-linear acoustics.
