What is space and why do we want to go there? What are satellites and space- crafts and how do they work?
Space environment is much different than the environment found on Earth, these differences, together with the fact that it is nearly impossible to fix satellites in orbit nor to bring them back to earth poses strict constraints on the product’s design, manufacture, assembly and tests. On top of all these, design must take into account the high price (up to 100K$ per Kg) and harsh environmental conditions of the launch scenario.
A small number of Israeli based agents builds these wonderful machines called satellites (including the Technion), IAI’s MBT Space is the leading place in Israel for building satellites both for low earth orbits and for Geo-Synchronic orbits.
In order to prove the ability of the space craft to withstand the environmental conditions mentioned above, space products use a set of very unique facilities such as vacuum chambers, acoustic chambers, shakers and more.
A review of the past, present and future satellites will be given together with the specific tests these space crafts must undergo before launch.
The main historic factors that pushed Israel into space and the difficulties present in launching a satellite into orbit from Israel will be presented.
A short overview of the worldwide space status, civil and military, in the present and in the future, will be given.
In conclusion, several problems and their solutions using academic theories will be presented and how aerospace students can be integrated in the space industry.
