The MRO (Maintenance, Repair, Overhaul) principles for the Graduated Aeronautical Engineers are essential.
The design engineers should consider two issues while performing the design of airborne vehicles: Airworthiness and life cycle cost through the entire operational period. It is important to establish the criteria for inspections required, life limited parts and repairs allowed while developing the preliminary concepts of the airborne vehicle, in order to have positive influence on the total operational cost. The design engineers are responsible for composing the MRO manuals (Parts Manual, Maintenance/Overhaul Manual, Repair Procedures etc.) to meet the Aviation Authorities regulations, like the CAAI (Civil Aviation Authority Israel) or FAA (Federal Aviation Authority).
Engineers who join operators or MRO facilities should be exposed to the MRO principles to enable them a smooth integration into those organizations. The engineers should realize their responsibility and importance to combine between airworthiness need, readiness and maintenance cost. The maintenance engineers should interpret the manuals’ instructions and establish the correct ways to execute them. The maintenance engineers are involved in the repair procedure of expensive parts interfacing with other disciplines as Material engineers, Chemists and Tool Designers. Maintenance engineers should assure that all activities meet Aviation Authorities Regulations.
In Israel we have the need for Aeronautical Design Engineers and Maintenance Engineers. Operators xuch as: IAF, EL-AL, ISRAIR, ARKIA, manufacturers such as: IAI (several groups), ELBIT, AERONAUTICS, and independent MRO such as: IAI/BEDEK AVIATION GROUP, TAT REPAIR DEVISION (former Chromalloy).
